Developmental Editing
A transformative 1:1 feedback service designed to give you everything you need to elevate your manuscript from “draft mode” to WORK OF GENIUS.
Let’s make your book irresistible to publishers and readers.
1.
2.
Is this you?
After being in the writing industry for 14+ years & editing dozens of manuscripts (novels, memoirs, personal development books), I’m guessing you might fall into one of these categories:
You’ve written a draft of a book. Yay! Congratulations! And you might be wondering, Is this any good at all? Is there even a book in here? Is it a total mess or could it one day be publishable?! Will someone please just tell me the truth? I’ve got you.
You’re partway through a draft and… you’re stuck. You can’t see your way out of the mess, and you’ve been trying for a while. You need a set of expert eyes to help you untangle the threads of your story and regain direction & momentum.
I have tons of experience developmentally editing novels, memoirs and leadership / personal development books.
But before we dive into nuts + bolts…

Let’s think cosmic for just a sec…
Stories are what change the world. Whoever controls the narrative, controls the world.
Right now the narrative is being spoken into being by people who are afraid, who are grasping for power.
I want the narrative of the world to be spoken by artists who trust in the benevolence of a conscious universe.
Who have fallen into the river of creativity and been carried along by something more powerful than themselves, something that has a vision broader and wider than anything our narrower human brains could dream up on their own.
I want the world to have deeper, truer, braver stories told and spoken into it.
Because if we’re going to change the world for the better, it’s going to depend entirely on whose words we are listening to. Whose words we are taking to heart.
So whether you’re writing a light-hearted romance, a spine-tingling thriller, a funny book about football;
Whether you’re writing a soul-searing memoir, a vulnerable self-help book sharing your hard-won lessons, or a fictionalized account of your life story…
I can help you tune the draft you have (whether it’s a partial or full draft, a first draft or a fifteenth draft) to resonate with your ideal reader, to say what you REALLY want to say, and to shift the world with your heart-deep story.
That’s my magic.
And I’m really fucking good at it.
How we get your book red-carpet-ready
In a developmental edit, I’ll help you…
Understand *exactly* what’s working in your book (so you can keep doing more of that)
Pinpoint what *isn’t* working (yet) – with specific examples of what’s falling short, and specific suggestions for how to fix those problems (so you can elevate your next draft into the stratosphere)
See what isn’t on the page yet – those missing puzzle pieces that, when you later click them into place, make your book soar
Envision your next revision with purpose – so you aren’t reading the same pages over and over and over
Make the biggest possible impact - because your deep desire is for your words to leave a legacy.
When we’re done, you’ll know exactly how to make your book better – because you’ll have a road map of what to do and how to do it.
And whatever we aren’t able to solve together, you’ll have a clear list of problems to solve and a tool to help unlock your deepest rivers of creativity to solve it in a way guaranteed to blow your own mind. (We’re gonna enlist the Muse to create the most perfect, elegant, gorgeous solutions… and your mind will be blown.)
Maybe you’ve tried a million things to move the draft that’s on the page closer to the vision you can see in your mind’s eye.
Summits, conferences, seminars, craft books
Continually revising on your own
Feedback from beta readers
Workshopping with other writers
Another editor who was maybe not super helpful or even mean (I’ve heard about them!)
The list goes on.
If there’s still a gap between the writing you’ve produced and the writing you envision, developmental editing just might be the bridge.
Hi!
I’m Brooke Adams Law, award-winning author, book coach, and CEO of Writing Brave Press.
I help creative, intuitive people who have always wanted to be writers step into their author identity and start, finish and publish brave, dazzling books.
My debut novel Catchlight won the Fairfield Book Prize, was named a Best Indie Book of 2020 by Kirkus Reviews, and was featured on Good Morning America’s blog.
When I finished the first draft of that book, I knew I could do better –but I had no idea how to make it better. So I went and spent two years getting my MFA in creative writing – to learn how to make ANY draft better.
I’ve worked with hundreds of writers and edited dozens of manuscripts since starting Writing Brave in 2019. If you’re wondering, can you help me, though?
The answer is yes.
Are you ready to move from
“I know something’s off” to…
➡️ Gaining clarity about what is and isn’t working in your book
➡️ Getting insight into how to AMPLIFY what’s already amazing about your book
➡️ Learning exactly how to tweak, revise or reimagine what isn’t yet fully serving the work
➡️ Stepping into a sacred container that combines profound, insightful support with concrete, practice guidance
…so that you can allow your book to channel through you more fully and clearly?

👉Here’s what I help people with:
I use proven editorial techniques to help you solve problems in your book that you didn’t know were there. Let’s dial in specific craft elements to blow your next draft out of the water!
Here’s what I might provide feedback on in a novel:
▶️ Character development (do your characters grow & change?)
▶️ Plotting and pacing (is the reader propelled forward?)
▶️ Craft elements like setting, dialogue, sensory detail (can the reader fully access the world of the book?)
▶️ How to increase tension in a scene (where do we need to raise the stakes?)
▶️ Character and relationship trajectories (is there a tangled web of drama?)
▶️ Voice & style (does the writing match the story?)
▶️ Structure (does the structure work best for the story you’re telling?)
Here’s what I’m looking at in a memoir (in addition to relevant items above):
▶️ Voice of innocence + voice of experience (do you have both? How can we bring in one or the other where needed?)
▶️ Structure (does the book go beyond ‘and then this happened’?)
▶️ Making meaning (do you reflect on & make meaning of the experiences you describe?)
And here’s what I look for in personal development:
▶️ Compelling, vulnerable stories (do you tell stories that illustrate your teaching?)
▶️ Clear organization of ideas (do I understand what you’re teaching?)
▶️ Structure (does it give the reader what they want?)
▶️ Audience (does your book speak to its intended audience?)
What My Clients Are Saying:
“I hired Brooke to do a full developmental edit of my manuscript because it was important to me not just to write a book, but to write a book that people would actually want to read and recommend to others.
Brooke delivered by helping me craft and tell a compelling message in a structure and flow that was so impactful that my publisher noted this in my first draft! The thing that was most helpful during the development editing process was her honesty. I told Brooke to be honest about the quality of my storytelling and writing because I wanted to write a book I would be proud to share for years.
Brooke used her unique approach to help me trust my gut to tell the story in my own unique way. She pushed me outside my comfort zone yet kept me in alignment to my true voice. If you’re looking for a development editor who will help you extract the stories you are meant to tell and package them in a compelling way your reader will love, hire Brooke.”
Kelli Thompson, author of Closing the Confidence Gap (Amplify Press 2022), which was named a ‘must read’ by the Next Big Idea Club
“I hired Brooke to do a developmental edit of my manuscript because even as a professional writer, I needed an intuitive coach to help me navigate my way through a difficult story. She listened me into my story, encouraging me to step deeper into my ideas, walking me through the process of revision in a gentle, supportive way.
I have worked with publishers who wanted to shape my story into something that would be marketable and easy to sell. The problem was, I was trying to write my memoir - my story - and in the process, the agent or developmental coach began to re-shape it into something that wasn't me. When I began to work with Brooke, I could see that she trusted me as the author of my story, my life. She entered into the creative process with me, listening deeply for the story line, turning up the heat as I "cooked" it, and celebrating the sound of my voice when it came through. That is so unusual and exceptional and I think every writer deserves to experience this with Brooke.”
Jane Clark, author of the memoir Story Carrier (Writing Brave Press, 2023) and the workbook Storying Silence (Writing Brave Press, 2025).
“When I finished the first draft of my first novel and knew it needed much more work, I shopped around for a coach who would work me hard by pointing out specific things I needed to do to improve, who was widely read enough to be able to show me examples of ways fine writers worked, and who was always enthusiastic about my work without acting like I needed to be gushed over.
I found Brooke, and I feel rewarded for my search. She is so smart, and knows the things a writer must do to develop deep characters, and to drive a story using lively dialogue, but she also seems to intuit when I need to step back from my work and look at the big plot and ask big questions.”
-Judy Dushku, author of the novel Is This The Way Home? (BCC Press, 2025)
“After participating in the Write-a-Chapter Challenge, I knew Brooke Adam Law was the coach/developmental editor my novel needed. I had finished my first draft but struggled with where to go from there. The pacing felt off. My characters came off unlikable and cliche. There were plot holes that needed ironing out. I hired Brooke for editing and guidance.
Brooke did an outstanding job understanding my vision and providing feedback that strengthened my work. She pinpointed big-picture areas that needed improvement, and gave my novel a sense of direction that it didn’t have before. Her honesty and knowledge of the storytelling process is worth the investment. I look forward to future projects with Brooke!
-Shanna Lowe, author of the novel Candy Sky Tells a Lie (self published, 2021)
Working with Brooke was a terrific experience! She really tuned in to what I needed for my book, which in my case, was structure.
She gave me strong suggestions for ways to structure and format my book on the divine feminine that were supportive of my subject matter and ultimately made it a better book overall. She came to our meetings with thorough notes, thoughtful questions and comments that prompted inspiration and revelations.
Brooke brings an incredible combination of profound, insightful support and concrete, practical guidance to her clients. Sessions with her feel like a sacred container that allow the book to come through the author's channel more fully and clearly. I have worked with other book coaches, and Brooke is by far my favorite. Her intelligent and intuitive approach is just what I was looking for. I'm so grateful for her support and guidance.

“I hired Brooke for a developmental edit because I wanted the advice and guidance from someone who has successfully coached other first-time authors. Her support and encouragement - making me feel that "I can do this!" and her positivity (and lack of judgment) on my first draft - were incredibly helpful. Brooke is authentic and genuine and truly cares about her clients. She’s got the perfect mix of support and challenge to put your first book out there!”

FAQs
What happens after I put down my deposit?
You’ll have the opportunity to choose your submission date – up to three months out. Exact timing depends on other projects in my pipeline. (Want exact availability? Email me at brooke@wearewritingbrave.com.)
Once you submit your manuscript, I’ll invoice you the remaining amount. ($.05/word minus your $500 deposit.) Then we’ll schedule your 1:1 session, usually about 3-4 weeks after submission.
What do I actually get again?
A customized, detailed editorial
A 60-minute 1:1 coaching session with me (you can record if you wish)
Two months of email access to me
The Plan Your Revision template
The Connect with the Spirit of Your Book audio activation
Can’t I just learn this from a book/summit/workshop/course?
In my (extensive) experience as a writer, there is absolutely no replacement for a professional editor’s feedback on my work. After working with hundreds of writers in different capacities since 2019, I’ll venture to say the same likely holds true for you.
What are the payment options?
A $500 deposit, with the remaining fee ($.05 times the word count of your manuscript) invoiced upon submission.
What is the refund policy?
I don’t offer refunds.
Do I need to have a finished draft?
Nope. Some people prefer to. Others want feedback on a partial draft. Either is fine as long as it meets the 20,000-word minimum. (And in case you’re wondering, there’s no maximum.)
“Brooke has a unique gift for bringing clarity and radiance to a manuscript with a methodical touch that feels soulful - a perfect blend of craft and intuition.”

This is writing brave.
Developmental editing is about getting the professional feedback you need to take your next draft to the next level.
You’ll walk away with a plan for your next revision that’ll elevate what’s on the page now to match (or exceed!) the vision in your mind.
